TBE - Tick Borne Encephalitis

tick

What Is Tick-borne Encephalitis?

TBE is viral disease transmitted by ticks that attacks the nervous system and it may cause illnesses ranging from mild to severe, with permanent consequences such as concentration problems, paralysis and depression. Approximately every 100th case results in the death of the affected person

How is TBE transmitted?

TBE is transmitted through tick bites from infected ticks -The Ixodes ricinis tick (common Castor bean tick) is prevalent across Europe. Not every tick transmits the dangerous TBE virus, but the rate of infestation in some high risk area can be high. In certain areas ticks can be found at altitudes of up to 1800meter above sea level, infection of the TBE virus have been reported at altitudes of -1500 meters.

Where do the Tick Hide?

Many believe the ticks fall from tree, they actually live in the soil and don’t climb much higher than20 to 70 cm on to the grasses and bushes in their search for blood host (people, animals). Therefore we generally brush tricks off vegetation when we pass through grasses or by bushes along the forest path, or when we walk on lawns or in the garden. Ticks have temperature-geared olfactory senses that detect “prey” .many affected people cannot remember ever being bitten because of te viral size of the ticks.

What are the signs and symptoms of TBE

The frequency of illness is subject to seasonal fluctuations and arises from the activity of the ticks. Mild winters and humid spring promote the incidence of ticks. Risk of infection can begin as early in February and late till November depending on the region.

Incubation period of the disease any where 6 to 14 days.
Initial Symptoms can start as general symptoms like temperature, headache, general weakness, Intestinal problems, fatigue similar to common cold.
Second phase of the disease symptoms can manifest anywhere 2 to 8 days after brief quite period. Second phase symptoms typically involve neurological symptoms when the viruses passed through the blood brain barrier system. causing severe headache, neck stiffness vomiting, impaired consciousness, delirium, cranial nerve paralysis loss of co-ordination leading to loss paralysis of the arms and legs and could affect the respiratory muscle paralysis leading to death
